"Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for health and well-being."

The universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 25

For many this fundamental right is denied:

• Every 10 seconds a child dies from water borne diseases.
• Over 1 billion children have no wholesome water near their homes.
• Every year over 4 million children under 5-years old die from water pollution.
• Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation causes 80% of all sickness and disease, and kills more people every year than all forms of violence, including war.
• Over 1.7 billion people lack access to clean water and over 2 billion suffer water borne diseases each year.
• More that one out of six people lack access to wholesome, safe drinking water and more than two out of six lack adequate sanitation, namely 2.6 billion people.

Water is becoming an increasingly valuable commodity

While the world’s population tripled in the 20th century, the use of renewable water resources has grown six-fold. Within the next fifty years, it is estimated that the world population will increase by another 50%. The estimated population growth, combined with industrialization and urbanization, will result in and increasing demand for water and will have continued serious consequences on the environment.

The negative impact on the environment is alarming and it is all the more critical that increased water use by people in urban environments, agriculture and industry does not further effect sensitive aquatic ecosystems and their dependent species. Regardless as to the use of freshwater, either domestic, agricultural or industrial, huge savings of water and improvements in water management is needed. Almost everywhere, water is wasted, and as long as people are not facing water scarcity they believe access to water is obvious and natural.

Many people are suffering from lack of water and urgent action is needed today to divert a greater tragedy.
